Huasteca Potosina is a wonderful area in Mexico and it is one of the greenest areas of the country. If you want to see the living natural miracles of Mexico with your very own eyes, Huasteca Potosina is the place to be. Not only is Huasteca Potosina very beautiful because of the giant mountains and the peaceful blue rivers, it’s also a very special area because of the magical waterfalls hidden here.

After a long drive with a overnight bus from Mexico City, we arrived in Ciudad Valles. This is the main tourist hub of Huasteca Potosina. We had booked an airbnb in this place and were planning to stay for about a week to get in touch with the beautiful nature of this area.

Since we arrived in Ciudad Valles early in the morning, we had contacted the owner of our airbnb whether is was okay for us to arrive around 6am in the morning and lucky us this was no problem. We took a taxi from the station to the house and the woman kindly welcomed us in her lovely place. The house was tiny and cozy and the woman shared the place with some very sweet cats who kept us company all the time.

We tried to rest a little until we would get picked up by our tour guides from the organization Sharet Tours at 8:30am.

Sharet would guide us trough Huasteca Potosina for the next days and looking back having the people from Sharet as our guides was the best decision we’ve made! They were amazingly friendly and helpful all the time and they treaded us as true friends.

1. Cascadas de Micos

When we started this day it was actually very rainy outside and we were afraid it wasn’t good weather to visit those waterfalls but on the road to this place the rain became less. We also easily forgot it was raining as we were really enjoying everything we saw on the road. We didn’t mind the rain anymore as we wouldn’t stay dry anyway because we were going to JUMP WATERFALLS!!

Jumping from the Micos waterfalls was an amazing experience which I would recommend everybody! We had the time of our life. Our guide told us exactly what to do and everything was really clear which made me feel very safe. We made about 5 different jumps and the highest waterfall we jumped had a height of 8 meters. At the start 8 meters didn’t sound like a big deal to me but standing on top of this waterfall I actually found out 8 meters was quite a lot. But although this height I haven’t felt scared any second. This was such an exciting experience which I enjoyed with all my heart.

After the adventure of jumping the waterfalls, we went rappelling at Minas Viejas as well which was quite a big experience too. Those two adventures (rappelling at Minas Viejas and waterfall jumping at the Micos river) can be combined in one day very easily since they’re in the exact same area. When you book a day trip to this area these two activities commonly are combined in one package. As I already said, we booked these activities in a package of the organization called Sharet.

If you’re looking for adventure, the visit to cascades de Micos is a must. The experiences you’ll have here definitely are some you’ll never forget and I’m sure you’ll look back at this day many times in future. :)

2. Cascada Salto del Meco

When we arrived at this place I was immediately so excited when I found out how amazingly calm it was here. There were just some people swimming and they were about to leave when we came. We had the entire place to ourself to really take time to enjoy the beauty we were surrounded by and to shoot some photos.

Cascada Meco

Cascada Salto del Meco to me is one of the most beautiful waterfalls I’ve ever seen. Not just because of the waterfall, but because of the complete view you have here. You can see this waterfall from different points and heights which are all breathtaking beautiful.

The waterfall ‘Salto’ has a height of 70 meters and ends in -how I call it- some natural pools. This view reminded me a lot of the Plitvice lakes in Croatia where I’ve been traveling around in March 2018.

Cascada Salto

Cascada Salto is a very unique waterfall and most impressive when you visit during the rain season since as it falls it creates a breeze and a huge natural spring which makes this place perfect for swimming. Commonly the Salto waterfall can be seen in the rainy season only because of the hydroelectric plant which is installed in its very own basin which detours the water during the rest of the year.

Heading down we had an amazing view over the waterfall ‘Meco’ which is 35 meters high and located on limestone which makes this waterfall a very unique place to be.

3. Cascada Tamul

With a height of 105 meters, Cascada Tamul is the biggest waterfall I’ve seen in my life so far.

If your time is short and you want to visit the most impressive waterfall only, then you definitely need to go here. Cascada Tamul is the highest waterfall in Huasteca Potosina and it is located in the Tampaon river. The road towards the waterfall is just as perfect as the waterfall itself!

The pangas

The road to the town of Aquismon (This in the point where you will step in the boats to Tamul) is a very scenic one since you’ll cross trough the breathtaking beautiful mountains of Huasteca Potosina.

We walked trough the fields between the mountains and between cows as well towards the river and once we reached the river we continued the journey by boats. The landscape here was very natural and really calm.

The boat owners greeted us as soon as we arrived and our tour guides explained us how we had to use the boats and what we were supposed to do once we would be on the river. The boats are called pangas in this region and they do not have a motor which means everyone in the boat has to row during the entire duration of the trip to Cascada Tamul. I did actually really enjoy that part. It was great to work all together as a team and though it was quite heavy, Tamul was completely worth it all.

The journey in the boat to Tamul itself had a duration of about 1,5 hours. We even had to walk near the river for a while where the river was too strong to go by boat.

This is where we visited the cave close to Cascada Tamul

Finally we reached the Tamul waterfall. Here we made a stop on a rock very close to the waterfall. Everyone got time to make a perfect photo and the guides where happy to help us with taking that photo! The view was literally breathtaking beautiful. It might be one of the best views I’ve seen in life.

Unfortunately because of the water current it is not possible to swim next to the waterfall but you won’t mind this when you’re there because

you’ll just be completely amazed by the beauty of Cascada Tamul right in front of you. On the boat trip back from Cascada Tamul we made a stop in an area with a water cave which really reminded me of the cenotes in Yucatan which I’ve visited during my holiday in Mexico in 2017.

4. Tamasopo waterfalls

Tamasopo is a little town in Huasteca Potosina. In this town is a very beautiful place called the Tamasopo Falls with waterfalls and traditional food in little restaurants all together in the same area. This place features three waterfalls tumbling about 20 metres into natural pools. I’d describe this place as one beautiful big garden or a natural spa where you will find a combination of nature with touristic attractions.

You can take the ziplane and fly over the water and there are many different natural pools where you can swim and relax. When you’re hungry you can visit one of the many restaurants they have over here. All restaurant have their very own theme and there is plenty of choice in what you would like to eat or drink.

As how I have noticed, Tamasopo is the more touristic place to be. Of all waterfalls I’ve visited around here, Tamasopo was the most busy one. This did definitely not take away the beautiy of this place. It was worth the visit and if you’re looking for a place to both relax and still enjoy the nature, I’d recommend you visiting These waterfalls. Everything you need for a pleasant moment you'll find here.

5. Puente de Dios

First of all, Puente de Dios is very good to combine on a one day tour together with visiting Tamasopo. It is about 3 km away from the town of Tamasopo.

Puente de Dios is a GORGEOUS place and it surely will give you a very magical kind of feeling while walking trough these beautiful sceneries.

When visiting, we had to take a stairway going down to the waterfalls which are located in some kind of cave. The stairway was a little long (about 300 steps) but once we were down we immediately found out it was totally worth it.

The road on the stairway towards these waterfalls is also a very natural road and the closer you get, the better you’ll start to hear the sound of the wild waterfalls that are hidden down the cave.

During some periods of the year it is possible to swim in the natural pools of Puente de Dios but when we visited this place the water was really wild so we couldn’t swim but I actually really enjoyed the wild water. It made this place even more magical and spectacular.

Because it wasn’t safe for us to swim there, we

decided to take a really great road trough this area

and we got the oppurtunity to see the waterfalls from

different perspectives.

Another great place in huasteca Potosina which I would also really recommend visiting is Las Pozas, the surrealistic garden created by Edward James. The garden is located in a subtropical rainforest in the mountains and it includes a huge surface of natural waterfalls and pools combined with towering surrealist sculptures.

The garden is near to Xilitla, a tiny village located in San Luis Potosi. Edward James wanted to some kind of recreate the garden of Eden and since he found Mexico a very ‘romantic’, he decided to make his dream garden here. In my opinion he did a really good job recreating the garden of Eden. The garden Las Pozas is breathtaking beautiful and a very unique and almost unrealistic place to be. You’ll feel like walking trough a dream while walking trough this beautiful garden and this place just really needs to be on your bucket list.

Where to stay in Huasteca Potosina

Most options for accommodations in Huasteca Potosina are in Ciudad Valles. We didn’t stay in a hotel during our week in Huasteca Potosina since we wanted to keep this travel the cheapest possible so in stead of the hotel we found a cheap airbnb in Ciudad Valles which was perfect for us.

So now this is where I’ll end this post. I really hope you enjoyed reading and if you’re planning to visit Huasteca Potosina, I wish you an amazing travel and I hope this blogpost could help you a little. :)
